CBIC Clarifies The Norms over GST On Pulses

The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) recently through a notification on GST has clarified that only pre-packed items up to 25 kg will attract 5% GST but if a retail shopkeeper supplies in loose quantity the item bought from a manufacturer or a distributor in a 25-kg pack, such sale to consumers will not attract GST. It also clarified that single packages of unbranded pre-packed and labelled food items like pulses weighing in excess of 25 kg have exempted from 5% GST levy.
Now, wholesalers, millers and retailers may opt for weighing more than 25 kg packaging item to avoid GST. Currently, customer buying above 25 kg is negligible. With this initiative, commodities prices including pulses may increase slightly.
