Sri Lanka receives maize from Japan for upcoming season

The Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) will provide maize seeds to Sri Lanka for the upcoming growing season, when farmers are anticipated to plant about 60,000 hectares of the crop. In collaboration with the UNDP, JICA would assist Sri Lanka in obtaining a "substantial amount" of the maize seeds it needs for the upcoming main (Maha) growing season. As a result of the current maize seed scarcity, the availability and price of several key food products and raises questions about the population's nutrition. The supply chain for raising livestock and producing food is also affected.
